Tuesday, January 24

10 am – Noon: Oregonians for Food & Shelter presents a Worker Protection Standards Workshop by Kaci Buhl, Oregon State University – Room D202-204

In January of 2019, new Worker Protection Standards (WPS) for agriculture and forestry operators will come into place. This session will help you determine what WPS requirements apply to your operation and how to comply, including exceptions, restrictions, exemptions, options, and examples. Additionally, new training requirements for handler and worker employees will be covered.

Wednesday, January 25

9 am – 11 am: Nut Growers Society of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia hosts a Grower Seminar – Room D202-D204

 Dr. Clark F. Seavert, Professor, Department of Applies Economics & Executive Director, Northwest Agribusiness Executive Seminar at Oregon State University, will discuss the economics of establishing a Hazelnut orchard in the Willamette Valley.

Other topics will include the new farm worker safety rules and a tutorial of YourMembership.com.

8 am – 5 pm: Pesticide Courses by Garnet Cooke & Laurie Cohen, OR-OSHA – Room D201

8 am: What’s New with the Worker Protection Standard?

The Worker Protection Standard was updated after more than twenty years and the majority of requirements take effect on January 2, 2019. Are you ready? If not, this presentation will explain how these changes affect your farming, nursery, or forestry operation, and what you will need to do to protect your employees and be in-compliance with the new provisions. Resources will be provided!

 

9 am: Decoding Respirator Language on Pesticide Labels

Learn how to quickly and easily decode the outdated respirator language currently present on over 2500 pesticide labels to protect YOUR health and that of your employees. Resources provided!

 

10 am: Cooke n’ Cohen Present: Pesticide Shorts

A compilation of brief, but noteworthy topics of definitions, recordkeeping , how to clean PPE and Updates from Oregon OSHA’s Pesticide Emphasis Program.

 

11 am: Pesticide Safety Gone Awry

Explore the commonalities of pesticide exposures from the supply side to the use side – from the fields to the medical clinics. Learn from the experiences of others to prevent it from happening to you!

 

1 pm: Heat Stress

Learn how to protect you and your employees from different phases of this hazard through prevention, recognition, and first aid.

 

2 pm: Learning from History: Pesticide Spills During Transportation

This course covers the variety of pesticide spills that have occurred in Oregon from either pesticide containers falling off a farmer’s truck to the rupture of semi-tankers on the interstate. Learning from history can provide valuable lessons to either prevent the occurrence or lessen the substantial financial costs and significant impacts to human health and the environment.

 

3 pm: Cooke ‘n Cohen Present: Touchy Topics

Two of the more ‘touchy topics’ in the revised WPS are the Application Exclusion Zone and the changes to all things Training. Learn the specifics and how to best approach these topics.

 

4 pm: Cooke n’ Cohen Present: PERC

Feeling overwhelmed by all the changes and not knowing where to go? This segment guides you through the wealth of information online at the Pesticide Educational Resources Collaborative.
